National Chung Hsing University Biotechnology Center and University of California, Davis Collaborate to Foster International Talent

National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) is actively partnering with internationally renowned universities to cultivate globally-minded talent. One of NCHU’s benchmark partners is the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), a world-leading research university ranked 59th in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Since forming an alliance in 1991, the two institutions have deepened their collaboration in teaching and research.

Since 2019, supported by the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Sprout Project, NCHU’s Biotechnology Center has been promoting diverse talent development programs, including:
1. The 3+X Program, which recommends third-year undergraduate students for direct admission to UC Davis master’s programs.
2. Recommending PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for short-term research at UC Davis.
3. Specialty Talent Training, recommending candidates in agriculture, life sciences, and veterinary medicine to study at UC Davis.
The highlight of these initiatives is the 3+X Program, which offers generous scholarships and allows outstanding third-year undergraduates to enter the UC Davis Global Study Program (GSP). Participants can simultaneously earn a bachelor's degree from NCHU and a master's degree from UC Davis by completing the required coursework.

This year, the Biotechnology Center secured scholarships exceeding one million NTD per student for participants in the 3+X Program, making it unique nationwide. To date, students from 13 NCHU departments, including Applied Economics, International Bachelor Program of Agribusiness (IBPA), Plant Pathology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, and Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Engineering, have collaborated with nine UC Davis research institutes, such as Agricultural and Resource Economics, Plant Pathology, Plant Biology, Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology (MCIP), Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, and Bio Systems Engineering. This program has yielded remarkable results over the past five years, benefiting many students who have obtained their master’s degrees from UC Davis and successfully pursued careers or further studies both domestically and internationally.

The Biotechnology Center will continue to promote various elite talent development programs, aiming to create a high-quality teaching and research environment with top international universities. This initiative seeks to enhance academic capabilities and strengthen NCHU’s global influence.
